Come and take part in this conference, chaired by Michèle VIROL, Emeritus Professor of Modern History, Université de Rouen-Normandie. Today's theme is: "Vauban, a poliorcète défenseur du bien commun".
The sixty or so fortifications still standing bear witness to the quality and beauty of Vauban?s
of Vauban?s defensive architecture, which he adapted to the terrain, landscape and local materials, while sparing the lives of his soldiers. Vauban was a military man who advocated peace. His writings are also reliable accounts of the state of France in the second half of the 17th century, which he viewed with the eyes of common sense, those of a small Morvan nobleman and not those of a courtier, which he never was.
