Description

During a guided and commented tour of the Gurs Camp, led by historian Claude Laharie and several volunteers, participants will hear readings, accompanied by musicians, of several testimonies written by people interned at Gurs at different periods between 1939 and 1945. Carefully preserved by the Gurs Association, these moving accounts come from some of the 60,000 people who were arrested and interned at Gurs by the Pétain police, which collaborated with Hitler. Approximately half of them were anti-Francoists, International Brigade members, opponents and French resistance fighters, while the other half were Jewish people considered “undesirable.” More than a thousand of them died at Gurs, and 3,907 Jewish men, women and children were deported from Gurs and subsequently murdered in Nazi concentration and extermination camps.
