Navarrenx, Bastion of the Béarnaise Independence thus underwent a terrible siege during the year 1569. The French, under the pretext of coming to safeguard the Catholic religion in a Protestant Béarn, decided to mount a military expedition. The siege lasted two and a half months but the Protestants of Bearn held out! Independence was saved!
Two years passed and the Queen decided to go to Navarrenx to visit her Officers, and to see if the town was recovering properly from the siege.
